Sony Exploring Spider-Man Shared Universe Again; Silver Sable Spinoff May Be In The Works

Spider-Man and Silver Sable

Sony had high hopes for The Amazing Spider-Man. The studio had set up for a subsequent sequel and spinoffs in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, since the film performed disappointingly at the box office and with critics, Sony had to cancel all of that. In the end, it may have been the best decision for the character for when it was announced that the studio would share the character with Marvel, everyone’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man was met with overwhelmingly high praise when he was introduced in Captain America: Civil War.

That kind of excitement can only help him leading up to his formal introduction in his standalone film due out in the summer of next year. That excitement isn’t only for the fans, it can also help studio execs who will use it to create sequels and spinoffs in their own connective universe. More on the story below.

Based on THR’s interview with Sony head Tom Rothman, it sounds like the studio is going to explore a Spider-Man connected universe once more.

Since you teamed with Marvel, do you plan to make a whole Spider-Man universe? Do you have plans for more work with Marvel?

“Yes to both those questions. It’s been fantastic, our relationship with Marvel.”

At least they are thankful. But what is going to make this shared universe any different from the one when they were working on The Amazing Spider-Man? While Marvel will be creative producers on the film, they won’t be in any way involved with greenlighting spinoffs or sequels:

Who has greenlight authority?

“Sony has the ultimate authority. But we have deferred the creative lead to Marvel, because they know what they’re doing. We start shooting the new Spider-Man in Atlanta [in mid-June].”

So in addition to the monetary deal made between the two studios, Sony ultimately has control over the Webslinger, with Marvel acting as a sort of a creative consultant. But that may help both parties out in the end as the last Spidey movie franchise ended on such a sour note.

Do you want to trim the costs of that franchise?

“I don’t want to trim costs. I want to make money. And sometimes you make money by trimming costs and sometimes by investing in things that are profitable. A movie like Spider-Man by Marvel, that’s not inexpensive. But it’s a great investment. Knowing that Marvel has such a clear, creative vision, I sleep very well at night.”

While a deal like this isn’t exactly what you call cheap, Rothman and Marvel are obviously looking at the bigger picture and were willing to work something out that would benefit them both.

Moving back to the greenlight authority. The question not only hints at Spider-Man standalone films but possible sequels and spinoffs as well. Jeff Sneider, who was on Popcorn Talk, reported Sony was courting screenwriter Abi Morgan (Shame) to pen a movie about Silver Sable, a Marvel antiheroine and supporting character to Spider-Man. Simon Thomas of Forbes speculated that Eli Roth would be in talks to direct the film. Of course, this is very early, so we should take it all with a grain of salt.

Making her comic book debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #265 (June 1985), Sable is a mercenary, hunter of war criminals, the leader of the Wild Pack, and CEO of Silver Sable International. She possesses no superhuman power skills but is highly adept at using hand-to-hand combat, firearms, and blades.
