To the shock no one, USA network has renewed their hit show Mr. Robot for a third season, halfway through season 2. It became a no-brainer for the network once the Emmy nominations were put out with Mr. Robot earning four nominations for Best Drama Series, Lead Actor (Rami Malek), Outstanding Writing (Sam Esmail) and Outstanding Casting. Amongst the awards the show has already received are Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor (Christian Slater) at this year’s Golden Globes and it also won three Critics Choice Television Awards for Series, Actor, and Supporting Actor.
More on this below.
Perhaps more than the accolades, what drives USA to continue its cyber drama is the fan response. It is regularly one of the hottest shows on social media, and draws steady ratings in its Wednesday night time slot. The show, which details the adventures of a group of hackers trying to take down “Evil-Corp,” and reset the economy for those struggling, perfectly captures the economic uncertainties and anxieties many Americans have. In a world where self-promoting, self professed billionaire Donald Trump is running for President against a candidate with major Wall Street connections, you can understand why Mr. Robot has captured the cultural zeitgeist the way it has.
Rami Malek stars as Elliot, a troubled young IT guy who secretly runs Fsociety, a hacker group that includes his sister (Carly Chaikin), and the ghosts of his deceased father, the titular Mr. Robot (Slater). Creator Sam Esmail has directed every episode of season 2, almost unheard of in the world of television.
Season 2 of Mr. Robot continues tonight at 10:00pm ET on USA. The 2016 Primetime Emmys are Sunday night, September 18th on ABC.
