A sequel to the classic 2003 action-adventure game Beyond Good & Evil has been in the works for…well, a long time now. So long that most fans simply roll their eyes at yet another promise of something that will likely never come.
But however unlikely Beyond Good & Evil 2 might seem, talk of a new game has arrived once again. And from an important source. Michel Ancel, designer of the original game, says the sequel is in pre-production once again. He also released a bit of concept art, which can be seen below.
If you head to Ancel’s Instagram page, there’s some other concept art images he’s shared recently before confirming the game.
Beyond Good & Evil was a very successful game critically, winning high praise from most. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it didn’t find its audience at first and made little money. Hence why publisher Ubisoft has been so reluctant to commit to a sequel for the game, which was originally planned as a trilogy.
But it most certainly found its audience eventually—a passionate group of fans, much like fans of Firefly, for example, who have been anxiously awaiting a continuation of the story for many years now.
Whether this is finally the time that continuation will begin to take form, who knows. Ancel says the game is in pre-production. This is interesting, as Ancel said the game was deep into development back in 2011. We even saw some gameplay footage (seen below). In that 2011 update it was said that the game would be arriving for the next generation of consoles, which is what we’re currently in, so it’s still possible. But if they’re only in pre-production right now, it’s likely that some or all previous work that had been done was scrapped.
While we wait to find out if it’s for real this time, here’s the trailer for the HD remaster of the game (which you should play immediately if you’ve never had the pleasure of playing Beyond Good & Evil before), and the cinematic trailer for the sequel we were teased with way back in 2008 to go along with the aforementioned gameplay video.
