It’s being reported that Universal Pictures and Microsoft are developing a movie based on the hit video game franchise Gears of War.

The movie comes from producers Scott Stuber (Ted, The Wolfman), who’s been attached to the project for a few years now, and Dylan Clark (Patriots Day, Planet of the Apes reboot).

Rod Fergusson has been a part of the Gears of War franchise since the beginning when it was created by Cliff Bleszinski and developer Epic Games. Fergusson was a major part of the excellent original trilogy before leaving Epic to help Irrational Games finish BioShock Infinite. When Microsoft acquired the Gears franchise from Epic Games in 2014, they were able to bring Fergusson back to the franchise to oversee things moving forward. That starts with Gears 4.

Of the movie announcement, Fergusson told Variety:

“As a way to support the franchise the next logical step was to make the movie. We’d done comics and novels in the past but the opportunity to work with Universal to bring the movie to life was perfect.”

“I think you have to let the movies be the movies. They’re two different mediums, and two different audiences in some cases, and I think some video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers. If you have this great IP with a deep backstory and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of it’s great, but if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie.”

That second quote will naturally lead fans to wonder whether this means the movie will include the familiar characters and storylines from the games, a story from one of the comics or books, or if it will be an all new story with new characters set in the same universe. At the moment, there is no announced answer to this question.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a Gears of War movie, of course. It’s been in the making since 2007 with no success so far, including one version that was to be made by Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard, and the Total Recall remake director Len Wiseman.
