George Lucas Isn’t Involved With ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Script, Per Screenwriter

Indiana Jones

Earlier this year, Disney confirmed they would be releasing Indiana Jones 5 in 2019. The film will be directed by Steven Spielberg, with Harrison Ford reprising the title role he’s been playing since 1981. Given how well the actor’s return to playing Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens was received, it only made sense that we get to see Ford play Dr. Jones once more.

But like the Star Wars films, some are worried that George Lucas will have some influence on the creative direction of the franchise. However, we might not have to worry about that any longer. According to David Koepp, Lucas might not be as involved as we originally thought. Check out what screenwriter Koepp had to say here below.

In an interview with Collider, Koepp said Lucas isn’t involved with the film, at least not when it comes to writing the script, “He’s not, to my knowledge. I’ve had no contact with him,” said Koepp. But the sequel will bring back the MacGuffin:

“I think that what [Indy] looks for and when he looks for it dictates what the movie’s gonna be. So the selection of the MacGuffin is everything. I think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, being set in 1957 there was a conscious desire to say, “˜Much like two of the other ones were World War II movies set in the 30s and early 40s, this is ’57 so a lot of our influences are gonna be science-fiction movies.’ You got that with the original [script], Jeb Stuart took the first shot at it with Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men from Mars. That was a really conscious decision that dictated a lot about what the story would be and what the movie would be like, and I think that was followed through on really nicely. I thought Steve did a really good job with that. I don’t know that the idea was most suited to an Indiana Jones movie, but that was what we did. So we tried to be very careful with the selection of the MacGuffin and the eras to give ourselves as much latitude to make the best kind of Indiana Jones movie that we most want to see. Learning how that’s the importance of the choice of the MacGuffin is a big deal.”

Koepp is more than willing to acknowledge the some of the flaws in The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull, and knowing what was wrong with that film means the screenwriter is learning from some of those mistakes. So now, he is turning his attention to finding the MacGuffin that will fit the narrative correctly.

Also, Spielberg admitted last year that it was George Lucas’ idea to do the alien story in Crystal Skull.

It should be interesting to see where Dr. Jones goes from here, especially since the new film could take place in the 60s or even the 70s. What kind of legendary MacGuffin will Indy be after this time remains to be seen.

The untitled fifth Indiana Jones film opens on July 19, 2019.
