Alan Thicke

One of the all-time great TV dads, Alan Thicke, has died at the age of 69. Thicke, a massive hockey fan who often played in charity games with legends of the sport and other celebrities, was reportedly playing hockey with his son when he suffered a heart attack and was taken to Providence St. Joseph’s Medical Center where he later passed away.

Thicke is best known for playing Dr. Jason Seaver on the hit ABC sitcom Growing Pains. The show ran for 167 episodes from 1985 to 1992, and also starred Joanna Kearns as Thicke’s character’s wife, and Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold, and Jeremy Miller as the character’s children, with Ashley Johnson playing the suddenly much older youngest child for the last couple of seasons. A homeless teenager (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) was brought into the family during the show’s final season.

Thicke appeared on numerous TV shows over the course of his career, which began in 1969. Some of the shows he appeared on include Murder She Wrote, Married With Children, The Outer Limits, Yes Dear, Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job!, The Bold and the Beautiful, How I Met Your Mother, Scream Queens, and recently This Is Us and Fuller House, just to name a handful. Movies he appeared in include Raising Helen, Alpha Dog, The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard, That’s My Boy, and others.

In addition to his work acting, Thicke also hosted game shows such as Pictionary, had his own talk show, The Alan Thicke Show, and his own reality TV show called Unusually Thicke.

He even worked in the music department on some notable titles, including composing the theme music for Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts of Life.

Thicke was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his work on Growing Pains, and also was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards and two Daytime Emmy Awards over the course of his career.

  1. That is sad, I grew up with “Growing Pains”. While occasionally a bit goofy, Alan seemed like a thoroughly decent guy. His son ROBIN Thicke, on the other hand is a complete douchebag.
