‘The Grey’s Joe Carnahan, Frank Grillo Set To Remake ‘The Raid’

The Raid: Redemption

The Grey director Joe Carnahan and star Frank Grillo are set to re-team for a new action project The Raid, a remake of the 2011 action hit The Raid: Redemption.

The pair made the announcement in a video shared on Instagram, as well as a post on Twitter in which Carnahan also confirmed that Gareth Evans, the director of the original, has given his blessing and will be a producer on the remake.

You can check out the video below.

Here’s a synopsis for the original movie, The Raid: Redemption:

As a rookie member of an elite special-forces team, Rama (Iko Uwais) is instructed to hang back during a covert mission involving the extraction of a brutal crime lord from a rundown fifteen-story apartment block. But when a spotter blows their cover, boss Tama (Ray Sahetaphy) offers lifelong sanctuary to every killer, gangster and thief in the building in exchange for their heads. Now Rama must stand in for the team’s fallen leader Jaka (Joe Taslim) and use every bit of his fighting strength – winding through every floor and room to complete the mission and escape with his life.

Though Carnahan calls the project a remake in the Twitter post, he and Grillo agree in the video that it will be more of a re-imagining. Carnahan says it will be closer in tone to a couple of his previous works, the aforementioned The Grey and Narc.

The director has also made Smokin’ Aces, The A-Team, and Stretch, and has been attached to direct the third entry in the Bad Boys series, Bad Boys for Life, for a while now.

Other titles Grillo has starred in include End of Watch, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Purge: Anarchy, Captain America: Civil War, and The Purge: Election Year.

The Raid was followed by a sequel in 2014, with a third movie planned.
