Last month there was hope that Hellboy 3 would happen after Oscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro tweeted that he spoke with Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and star Ron Perlman about making a sequel.
It would have been nearly a decade since we’ve heard anything about a potential sequel, with all parties being highly interested in returning to that franchise. Unfortunately, nothing came of it. Now del Toro has confirmed that Hellboy 3 “will not happen.” More on the story below.
The Crimson Peak director took to Twitter to break the bad news:
It seems as talks for a sequel were not as productive as we first thought. Which is unfortunate news to those who hoped that discussions between the parties involved would lead up to a conclusion to a fan-favorite franchise.
Of course, the Hellboy films aren’t nearly as popular as other comic book superhero films that were being released at the time, but it did manage to find a fan base. However, with studios now moving toward shared universes, the idea of a third Hellboy lost its appeal.
The fact that Hellboy is ending on a cliffhanger, the title character resigned from B.P.R.D. and deciding to live the rest of his life with Liz, who was pregnant with his twins. This led up to the idea that the character would be the father of two children who were in direct opposition of each other. Not to mention that Hellboy is also the driving force behind the apocalypse.
It’s not clear why del Toro has decided to end the franchise now. The director never gave a reason why a sequel will not happen. All we can do is provide speculation. Ron Perlman, who played Hellboy in both movies, isn’t getting any younger. But that hasn’t stopped him from talking about it. Plus it’s been almost a decade since the last film was released, so it may have come down to the studio believing there isn’t any interest in closing out the franchise. Or maybe del Toro just has too many projects on his plate. He is currently working on The Shape of Water, which stars Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Doug Jones, and Octavia Spencer.
