It’s been awhile since I’ve reviewed an Honest Trailer, but it is Oscar season and the gang at Screen Junkies set out to tackle the 9 Best Picture nominees. Along with the films, narrator Jon Bailey takes aim at Hollywood and the President in this latest edition. With so many films nominated, let’s get right to it.
Arrival – Forget about pronouncing the director’s name right and enjoy Amy Adams trying to once again communicate with aliens (Haha, Superman joke). New Title – Squid Words
Lion – Let’s face it, it’s hard seeing every Oscar movie, and this one features a little Indian boy, and Nicole Kidman, and”¦ New Title – If You Say You’ve Seen This, You’re Probably Lyin’… (I have”¦ no BS)
Hell or High Water – Time to once again hear that one great Texas cowboy voice Jeff Bridges does in like every modern Jeff Bridges movie. And since it’s entertaining and not pretentious at all, the film has NO shot at winning anything. New Title – Hell It’s a High Honor Just to be Nominated
Hidden Figures – Watch the incredible story of the black women who helped NASA and the one white man who helped them, Kevin Costner! New Title – Diary of a Black Math Woman
Manchester by the Sea – From the writer of the Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (no joke) comes Casey Affleck’s real life story, of living in the shadow of a much more appreciated older brother. New Title – Manchester by the Feckin Sea (Okay, I laughed out loud for that one).
Moonlight – Come along as we check all the Oscar boxes; young, black gay, drugs, poverty, multi-generational, based on an autobiographical play”¦ New Title – All of the Oscar Things (another loud laugh)
Fences – Watch the movie, that’s really just a play, in one setting, with actors, acting, in all sorts of ways… but it’s totally a movie and not a play. New Title – Actors
Hacksaw Ridge – Celebrate Mel Gibson, quick, before he says something racist again! This time he’s telling the tale of a historical pacifist who saves everyone surrounded by horrific amounts of blood and gore”¦ wait is this just Passion 2! New Title – War and Pieces
La La Land – Enjoy this ode to Hollywood’s musical past with it’s obscene amount of nominations because Hollywood simply can’t resist a movie about the movies; I still haven’t forgiven them for Best Picture: The Artist… New Title – Hollywood Hand Job.
With the nominees covered it’s time to get political, because it’s the Oscars and even the liberals will get annoyed by how much Trump bashing there is, so we let The Donald take a swing on Twitter:
Starring: (In Trump tone) The Highly Overrated Meryl Streep, Mar-a-Lago Ali, Potential Terrorist (Sunny Pawar in Lion), Immigrants (Aliens from Arrival), a 6 at Best (Emma Stone), and a Real American who fought bravely in the Braveheart War (Mel Gibson).
Bailey mentions how Amy Adams was snubbed for Arrival, coupled with her 5 previous Oscar losses, and posits what you have to do to actually win one… cue Leo in The Revenant. And kudos to Bailey, and the writers for mentioning my personal favorite film of 2016 which received NO awards, Sing Street (available on Netflix).
Screen Junkies currently has just under 6 million subscribers on YouTube, and release new Honest Trailers every Tuesday.
The 89th Annual Academy Awards airs Sunday, February 26th on ABC.
