“Earth just googled hero, and I came up number one.”

2016 was a year stocked to the brim with great horror films. From South Korea to the Southern United States, horror was both critically and financially successful last year. One of the most balls out crazy horror films to debut last year was Jonathan Straiton’s Night of Something Strange. The film takes a cliche premise of sexy kids going out for Spring Break and turns it on its head, as they are stalked by an STD that turns them into sex crazed mutated zombies. Featuring corpse rape, a zombifying STD, killer exploding genitalia, and some of the most outrageously hilarious dialogue in the genre, you will surely never forget Night of Something Strange.

Check it out below.

Debuting at the Phoenix Film Festival in April, it took home “Best Horror Film Feature.” I first saw the film at the New York City Horror Film Festival in October, where it received the award for Best Feature as well. The reaction was fantastic; the crowd gasped, laughed out loud, and groaned in disgust. The film has taken home many awards for Best Special Effects at various film festivals across the country. I had the chance to speak to the director and discuss the filmmaking, incredible effects, budget, and all things “strange”. The film began streaming on various VOD sites late last year, and it is now available on Blu-ray and DVD as of Tuesday, February 21st. The Blu-ray includes the film in 1080p HD, with a bunch of special bonus features that take you into the guerrilla style filmmaking of low budget indie horror.

Blu-ray Special Features:

Audio Commentary – Director/writer Jonathan Straiton and co-writer/producer Ron Bonk sit down to deliver a really funny commentary. You can tell these guys are good friends, as Bonk’s She Kills was basically being made the same time, and the films share many of the cast members. In a look-and-you’ll-blink cameo, Jennie Russo, the lead in She Kills, is the Patient Zero corpse that Cornelius jumps on in the opening scene. This was a true guerrilla film shoot, as the two trade stories of endless shoots, sleepless nights, long drives going in the wrong directions, and lighting issues. They discuss some of the crowd reactions to certain shots, and revel in the gross out nature of the film.

Cast Cam: Behind the Scenes – Showcasing the renegade shooting of a low budget independent horror film, the Cast Cam shows the cast and crew working on several of the outside scenes from the motel. We see director Jonathan Straiton and co-writer and second unit director Ron Bonk going over sketches and story art by flashlight, and get to see multiple angles of some of the shots. It is so refreshing watching these filmmakers and actors out there working hard, maximizing their ridiculously low budget, and still getting kickass makeup and practical special effects.

You can also see the cast is having a legitimately good time making this film. Trey Harrison (Dirk) steals the camera at one point, Wayne W. Johnson (Cornelius) attempts to pick up women while in full zombie makeup, and Tori Ann Gambale (Carrie) is flattered after being told she can be in “Zombie Maxim.”

Gag Reel – 3:15 seconds worth of outtakes from the cast. In a movie this completely nuts, they can probably release a hour long DVD of nothing but laugh-takes. This was funny, especially watching right after the film.

Auditions – Watch cast members during their script reads.

Bonus Trailers:

She Kills – Directed by NOSS co-writer Ron Bonk and featuring many of the same cast mates, a 70s style grindhouse revenge film. Available now on Amazon Prime.

The Barn – An 80s style slasher, Halloween meets Night of the Demons.

Frankenstein Created Bikers – A film the trailer calls a “35mm exploitation epic” is loaded with boobs, bikes, blood, and carnage.

The DVD features a widescreen presentation of the film in Dolby Digital sound, but more importantly features a quote from ME on the back of the box. You can purchase Night of Something Strange on Blu-ray or DVD, along with other cool merch right here. They have t-shirts, motel keys, condoms (!), and one of the greatest movie posters you’ll ever see. Support indie-horror!

If you live in the tri-state area, head down to the New Jersey Horror Con & Film Festival at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Edison, New Jersey, March 31st – April 2nd. Night of Something Strange is the Saturday Midnight Movie featuring a Q&A with director Jonathan Straiton after the screening.
