Over thirty years since the release of the original film and the franchise still holds just as much magic for me now as it did then. I speak, of course, of the movie Highlander. With the release of this newest comic Highlander: The American Dream #1, I find myself drawn back into the world of sword swinging immortals and their quest to be the last of their kind. As it is so eloquently put: “There can be only one.”
Often I will try to avoid referencing previous material but with this particular comic it is necessary as the modern part of it takes place during the original film. those unfamiliar with it will still get the gist of the plot, but it is far more telling for those of us in the know. Featuring the original Highlander, Connor MacLeod, this story is about how he became the man he was/is and the events that shaped him.
Loaded with multiple references to known characters, it also introduces a couple of new immortals to keep it fresh. As usual, this first issue deals with the set up of the storyline and familiarizes the reader with the nuances of the plot and characters. That said, it was atypical in that it deepened the protagonist’s history beyond what fans would already know, expanding rather than glossing over the information. Well written with expertly rendered artwork, this is a must have for Highlander fans and new readers alike!
