Happy International Women’s Day
With the political climate being what it is this year, it’s no surprise that this observance is getting more attention this year, especially with #DayWithoutAWoman taking place, too. Wear red in solidarity.
Once again, Google has honored the day with a Doodle.
Each year, the United Nations gives the day a specific theme, with 2017’s being #BeBoldForChange, which is a “call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world – a more inclusive, gender equal world.”
Game of Thrones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (who plays Jaime Lannister), as a goodwill ambassador to the United Nations Development Programme and in conjunction with International Women’s Day, has launched a Care2 petition, which “calls on fathers around to the globe to unite and empower women and girls by promoting literacy and education.”
“My petition asks fathers around the world to dedicate themselves to empowering young women and girls by reminding their daughters that there is nothing they cannot achieve; to help ensure young women and girls have just as much opportunity as their male counterparts; to encourage young women and girls to voice their opinions loudly and often.
“I’m also asking fathers to speak out against practices like child and forced marriage and female genital mutilation, and to support policies and legislation that combats violence against women all over the world,” added Coster-Walduau.
Jessica Chastain stars in the incredible story of Antonina Å»abiÅ„ska in the upcoming The Zookeeper’s Wife.
Antonina Å»abiÅ„ska was a working wife and mother who, along with her husband, became a hero by saving hundreds of Jews during World War II, providing a safe haven for them in her zoo. At a crucial time of sustaining and elevating women’s rights, we feel it is important to share her story to highlight the strength and bravery of women in history who stood up to injustice. So, let’s band together by taking bold action to help drive change for women through purposeful collaboration this International Women’s Day.
