Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day, an annual observance to celebrate the economic, political, and social achievements of women past, present, and future, and also to bring about awareness of the struggles of women around the world.
Once again, Google has honored the day with a Doodle, while some of our favorite geeky proprieties are also celebrating and getting the world to take notice, such as Star Wars, which shared a video message highlighting the many kick-ass women of the their universe. Check out the video here below, along with some other messages from various sources for this most excellent observance.
Each year, the United Nations gives the day a specific theme, with 2015’s being Make It Happen, which is for “encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women.”
Follow the hashtags #InternationalWomensDay and #IWD2015 on Twitter for more on what’s happening for International Women’s Day 2015.
Of course, Happy International Women’s Day from Geeks Of Doom! We salute all the ladies of the Doom Crew and our female fans, along with all the awesome women filmmakers, actresses, video game makers, musicians, comic book creators, writers, artists, astronauts, and more who make the world a more wonderful and geeky place. Here’s to progress and much more to come!
Below are some fun and inspiring messages in honor of International Women’s Day.
And let’s not forget Patricia Arquette’s impassioned Oscar acceptance speech for Best Support Actress for Boyhood when she called for equal pay for women:
In celebration of International Women’s Day, take part in YouTube’s global #DearMe initiative to inspire and empower young girls everywhere. We all know that growing up is tough. But if you could go back in time, what wisdom would you share with your teenage self? It all starts with two words. Dear Me.
