Over the weekend, the Internet went crazy when word got out that The Matrix was being rebooted. In all fairness, something like this getting rebooted isn’t at all surprising considering studios want to revive certain successful franchises. But for a film to end the way it did, why even bother rebooting it when there is so much more story left to tell? So Zak Penn, the writer hired to write the next (or newest) chapter of The Matrix, took to Twitter to explain what he will be doing for the franchise.
Find out his thoughts on the matter and his “approach” to it below.
Penn clarified those nasty reboot rumors about the film, saying that “no one could or should REBOOT The Matrix.” He even cited Animatrix and the comics as evidence to back up his claim.
For those who may not know or remember, the Animatrix was a series of animated vignettes that linked or gave some historical context to the trilogy. This could actually work though as it would keep the continuity of the franchise intact. The property would remain the same even though it doesn’t look the same. Better yet, you could use key characters from the previous films as cameos, and then expand the franchise further with new characters.
But on the off chance that the film is a reboot, Penn has an idea of who should be cast as Neo, a role previously played by Keanu Reeves.
With Reeves currently riding high on John Wick, I’d say that is the best possible move. The actor hasn’t lost his touch, and it would be fun to see what would happen if he became Neo again. Of course, there is a chance that Penn could take the property in a different direction.
But as to why The Matrix should be explored again, Penn explained by answering a question he asked himself.
That does make sense. Again, the Animatrix assured us that the Matrix is larger than we think, and because of that, there are plenty of stories to tell. There have been plenty of movies that have survived the reboot phase/changing of the guard. Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens have proven the franchises can live on with new faces and a new story. Of course, they didn’t have to worry about being rebooted. Which only proves why it should be a continuation or branching off of the property. Either way, we’ll keep you posted as the story progresses.
