Ewan McGregor is a man of many talents. He can sing. He can dance. He can romance. He can also use the Force. Heck, he can even play two different characters on this season of Fargo. But is he ready to grow up and be an adult?
Well, it looks like we will find out. The actor is currently in talks to play the title character in Disney’s live-action Winnie the Pooh movie Christopher Robin. More on the story below.
THR was the first to report on the story. According to them, McGregor would play an adult version of Christopher Robin “who’s lost his sense of imagination and is a businessman focused on work and success.” The idea itself sounds like a play off of Hook where Robin Williams played Peter Pan who ended up growing up and becoming a businessman. Only to discover that he has to rediscover his childhood innocence to save his children from the evil Captain Hook.
The project was first announced in 2015. At the time Alex Perry Ross was tapped to write and direct. The script was then rewritten by Tom McCarthy (Up). Now the studio has given it to Oscar-nominated screenwriter Allison Schroeder (Hidden Figures), and Marc Forester (Finding Neverland) will direct.
McGregor has been a bit busy lately. He’s appeared in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, where he plays Lumiere, the suave candelabra with quite singing voice. That film has grossed over a $1 billion and counting. He also has a role in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting 2. The actor currently has a role in the third season of Fargo, where he pulls double duty playing two characters.
There’s also that little matter of him wanting to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Star Wars spinoff. Given the success of Rogue One and the high anticipation for the untitled Han Solo spinoff, I say the character certainly deserves a spinoff of his own. Not only that but McGregor is still young enough to reprise it and he has a genuine interest in doing it.
But back to the subject at hand. Disney is currently developing or producing live-action adaptations for Mulan, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Dumbo. And many others thanks in part to the success of films like Alice In Wonderland, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and Beauty and the Beast, we are going to see Disney adapt their animated properties into live-action films.
No word yet on when Disney could release Christopher Robin, but we will keep you up to date when they announce it.
