“I’m the one they should be scared of! Not you. Not Mister J. Because I am Harley freaking’ Quinn.”
Warner Bros. has just released the first trailer for Cathy Yan“˜s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) – yes, that’s the actual title.
The film will see the return of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, who has to join forces with the other dames of Gotham City to protect Cassandra Cain, a young girl, who comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask. Check out the full trailer below.
I feel that Birds of Prey will be the best representation of Harley Quinn, who has never really gotten a fair shot at being a character since her debut in Suicide Squad. Robbie was easily the best part of that ensemble film by adding that wacky charm to an otherwise dark and overly disappointing ensemble film with a very weak script. But now she will lead her own crew, who seem to be far more competent than the previous one she worked with. Additionally, the script comes from Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, who is also writing the rumored Batgirl and Flash standalone film.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Since the events of Suicide Squad, Batman has disappeared, leaving Gotham City unprotected from crime, and Harley Quinn has left the Joker. When Cassandra Cain, a young girl, comes across a diamond belonging to crime lord Black Mask, Harley joins forces with Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to help protect her.
Joining Harley Quinn to protect Cassandra Cain are Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Gotham City detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez). Ewan McGregor will play Black Mask, an evil Gotham City crime lord, while Chris Messina plays the serial killing Victor Zsasz. Ali Wong also stars.
It will be interesting to see where the DC Extended Universe goes from here. We know that Robbie will return to reprise her role as Harley Quinn, once more, in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. But will Birds of Prey give an opportunity for some of the other characters to have their own standalone films? That remains to be seen. But so far, the film looks like one wild and fun ride which is going to be filled with some spectacular set pieces and exciting action sequences.
Birds of Prey is scheduled to open in theaters on February 7, 2020.
