Last time on Supernatural, a half-man half-goat god eviscerated someone in a failing meatpacking plant in a failing town. Dean and Sam (Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles) investigated this familiar territory one-off, and discovered that the sheriff’s family have a blood sacrifice god legacy, “Hunting people, killing them — the family business!” Turned out the sheriff’s brother was the culprit, after the sheriff shut it down years ago. Kvetch (David Haydn-Jones) went to the bunker and snooped around.

Spoilers below.

Supernatural 12.19 “The Future” review: Dagon forces Kelly (Ali Ahn, Courtney Ford) to take vitamins. She’s not eating either. “He’s gonna kill me.” This evil child will be born. Kelly decides to kill herself, but it doesn’t take. She thinks her baby is good and saved her. Dagon sets her straight. I actually couldn’t watch the suicide – very disturbing.

Sam tries to figure out the math on the Nephilim’s birth. Castiel (Misha Collins) shows up finally. “I was in heaven working with the angels.” Dean is pissed. Cass says he cannot keep failing. “You, me, and Sam are just better together.” Aw!!!!! They are a family and that will play into later in the episode.

Sam thinks he has the answer – remove the grace and it’s just a kid. Dean goes to share with Cass, but he’s disappeared again already, stealing the Colt and returning it to Kelvin (Nathan Mitchell). They find the pair, and Cass points the gun, but just can’t do it. He would not be the Castiel we love if he did.

Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino) threatens Dagon with endless torment. “Make it right.” She tortures Kelvin for the info.

Cass says he has to kill them. Kelly tries to convince him that the baby is good. He doesn’t believe in a bigger plan. Our Cass has been kicked one too many times. Her eyes glow as Castiel feels the baby kick. The boys show up. Kelly steals the Impala with Castiel in the backseat. She says her baby chose him to take care of him. They go to heaven’s gate (a sandbox in a playground). Dagon shows up and kills Joshua (Paul Barton). Everybody fights at the playground and everyone is defeated (goodbye Colt), but Kelly gives Cass the power of the Nephilim and sets Dagon on fire.

Castiel: “I’ve been so lost. I’m not lost anymore.” He believes in the child. The Winchesters protest, but he touches them and they pass out. Oh man, they are going to wake up so mad.

What do you think? Evil or good? Knowing the track record of the show, I say evil, but I hate that Cass is always the bad decision maker, and I want him to have this win.

This was a good episode that had no monster-of-the-week, but drew us closer to the end of this season storyline. The brothers and Cass have always had this conflicted familial relationship that was always resolved by the love and loyalty they have for each other. Cass is a Winchester too.

Supernatural airs on Thursday nights at 8:00pm ET on The CW.
