Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers have chosen a director for their battle of the titans movie Godzilla vs. Kong.
Adam Wingard, best known for his work directing horrors/thrillers You’re Next, The Guest, Blair Witch, and segments of V/H/S, V/H/S/2, and The ABCs of Death, has signed on to helm the movie.
A showdown between the two monster movie legends was first announced back in 2015, when Kong: Skull Island moved from Universal Pictures to WB. The latest Kong movie was released a couple of months ago, and has made over $565 million worldwide.
Around the same time as the release of Skull Island, a writers room was established for Godzilla vs. Kong. The group of writers is headed by Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean, Aladdin, Shrek), who, believe it or not, also worked on Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Godzilla…though only on the story; Emmerich and Dean Devlin wrote the actual screenplay.
Others brought in for the writers room include J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, Thor, Sense8), Lindsey Beer (The Kingkiller Chronicle, Transformers), T.S. Nowlin (Pacific Rim: Uprising, The Maze Runner), Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne (Star Trek Beyond), Jack Paglen (Transcendence, Alien: Covenant), and Cat Vasko (Grrl Scouts).
Before Skull Island came 2014’s Godzilla, a reboot of the franchise. A sequel to that movie is on the way titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters, with Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus) directing.
The story for Godzilla vs. Kong has not yet been shared, but we’ll hopefully know more after King of the Monsters is eventually released. And what more do we really need to known, anyway—it’s Godzilla going head-to-head with King Kong. It sells itself.
Wingard also directed Netflix’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Death Note, and has been attached to the American remake of the horror I Saw the Devil, among other projects.
Godzilla vs. Kong is currently scheduled for release on May 22, 2020.
