Release Date Set For Overlord

A release date has been set for Overlord, which is described as a supernatural World War II thriller.

An October 26, 2018 release date has been locked in for the movie, which comes from Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot. Starring is Jovan Adepo (Fences, The Leftovers) and Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street, Everybody Wants Some!!). Directing is Julius Avery (Son of a Gun), from a scrip penned by Billy Ray (The Hunger Games, Captain Phillips) and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Vacancy).

In Overlord, Adepo and Russell will play a pair of paratroopers who drop into enemy territory, heading toward a targeted Nazi-occupied village with a German radio tower. But as they approach the village they discover that much more is going on than just a military operation, and they find themselves dealing with supernatural forces that are part of a Nazi experiment.

In WWII “Operation Overlord” was the code name for the Battle of Normandy, which was launched with the arrival of Allied forces on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, better known as D-Day.

The movie will have plenty of competition to deal with around the time it arrives in theaters. One week before its October 26, 2018 release date, Warner Brothers releases their take on Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book being directed by Lord of the Rings, King Kong, and The Hobbit star Andy Serkis, titled Jungle Book: Origins. Also releasing a week before is The Girl in the Spider’s Web, Sony’s follow-up to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. And yet another release the week before is the next Halloween movie being godfathered by John Carpenter.

The week after its release also currently has two big titles scheduled. The first is Disney’s live-action take on Mulan. The second is the X-Men feature Dark Phoenix.

This is all still far away, however, and chances are at least one or two of these titles will shift to a new date. And at the moment, the movie has no direct competition with October 26th all to itself. That too will likely change at some point, perhaps with one of the above-mentioned movies moving up or down a week.

The biggest question many will have about the movie, as has already been speculated, is if there’s more to it than we currently know. As we’ve seen, movies from Paramount and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot have a chance of becoming part of the Cloverfield universe. It was a big surprise when Dan Trachtenberg’s Valencia was revealed to be 10 Cloverfield Lane, and we already know that the upcoming God Particle—which is set for an October 27th release later this year, interestingly enough—will be the third movie set in that cinematic universe.

Time will tell if Overlord will become the fourth movie, and take the Cloverfield mythos back to at least to the 1940s during WWII.
