The Shape of Water Header

The problem with Guillermo del Toro‘s Crimson Peak wasn’t so much about the film as how it was marketed. While it was a gothic romance thriller, the marketing seemed to emphasize that it was a horror. So how do you fix that problem with the filmmaker’s newest movie, The Shape Of Water? Just be straightforward with what it is, of course.

Del Toro’s twisted romance fantasy centers on a mute young woman who works at a top secret government facility where a gilled-man is currently being experimented on. Though they cannot speak to each other and are a different species, they feel an instant connection. Soon it becomes a race against time to help rescue the creature as the experiments are becoming painfully severe.

Check out the full trailer below.

Sally Hawkins plays the lonely Elisa, a mute girl who doesn’t feel like she belongs on this earth. But when she and a co-worker discover this mysterious creature (played by frequent del Toro collaborator Doug Jones) that the U.S. government is holding captive, she develops a bond. Of course, the nature of her relationship is questioned at every turn from an ethical standpoint to a religious one. “You may think that thing looks human. It stands on two legs, right? But we’re created in the lord’s image, you don’t think that’s what the lord looks like, do you,” asks Michael Shannon‘s villainous character.

It soon becomes clear that the government will use their bond to serve their nefarious needs as the creature becomes more intelligent, capable of understanding language and emotions.

Del Toro knows how to create a beautiful elaborate world that’s wrapped in a sense of mystery and intrigue. The Shape of Water seamlessly combines that real world setting using World War II as a backdrop with supernatural elements. The way that del Toro uses the water as a character itself is almost poetic. Of course, this is just the first trailer, we have yet to see a lot more of this film as it gets closer to its release date.

The film also stars Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Here’s the official plot synopsis

From the master storyteller, Guillermo del Toro, comes The Shape of Water – An other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Doug Jones.

The Shape of Water will be released on December 8.
