Rian Johnson‘s work in the Star Wars universe at Lucasfilm isn’t over yet.
That’s because The Last Jedi director is now tapped to oversee a brand new trilogy which will explore the unseen corners of the galaxy. More on the story below.
The news first broke on the Star Wars official website. While The Last Jedi looks very impressive so far, it looks like Lucasfilm wasn’t ready to let go of him quite yet. But rather than give him the keys to direct the next installment, we will be getting an all new trilogy from him that will divert from the current saga. Johnson will also be writing and directing the first installment of this mysterious new trilogy, joined by longtime collaborator Ram Bergman as producer.
Johnson and Bergman released a joint statement for the announcement, saying:
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi. Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
Of the news, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said:
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
News of this only tells us that The Last Jedi is exceeding studio expectations. No way they would ask a director to come back again if it didn’t.
While a new trilogy that explores a new corner of the galaxy sounds cool, it will be interesting to see if it has anything to do with the mythology that we know now. Will there be Jedis and Sith? Bounty hunters and smugglers? What’s this corner of the galaxy going to be like? So many questions that will be left unanswered but it’s so exciting to see that we have a director that the studio trusts to oversee it.
Let’s not forget that Lucasfilm also has the spinoffs. While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has been the only film that has been released, they have been looking for ways to tell more spinoffs with Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, and a possible Boba Fett spin-off. You get the gist. But as those spinoffs are meant to tell stories that have nothing to do with the current saga, it will be interesting to see if this new trilogy will inspire new spinoffs.
No release dates have been set for this trilogy or who the studio has in mind to appear in the films. But we will keep you up to date should any news come up.
Johnson’s upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in U.S. theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
