It’s not a con or a swindle, it’s all about putting on a show. And that’s what Hugh Jackman is going to do in the musically-inspired film The Greatest Showman, where he plays P.T. Barnum, the nearly down-and-out title character who not only finds fame in gathering extraordinary people to play at his show, but gives them a sense of hope as well. Of course, there are other subplots that will move the film.
Now Fox has released a brand new trailer that sheds some light on that sense of hope plus some of the other struggles that Barnum will have to go through to achieve his goal of giving his family everything they could have ever wanted. Check out the latest trailer here below.
The trailer uses all the traditional tropes for a film like this. A character who is down on his luck feels unhappy that he is unable to give his wife and kids the things they want. Despite the fact that his family says otherwise. Then a spark of inspiration gives way to an ambitious plan. This plan is to bring together a group of freaks and outcasts in a show that would either exploit their strangeness or their talents. We see this plan work; however, it seems society cannot accept them. So even though he has the tools and the people to give his family want he wants, he discovers that monetary things cannot bring happiness to all. Still, he moves forward with that ambitious plan not realizing that he has created a new family by bringing a sense of hope to those who have been outcast.
It’s a sappy sentiment, but one that works nonetheless. The song and dance is joyous, and it all builds to that moment that may bring a tear to your eye. So I could understand why a film like this may be released during the holidays. One thing is for sure, they are really leaning on the showmanship aspect of the film.
The Greatest Showman also stars Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya, and Rebecca Ferguson.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Inspired by the imagination of P. T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.
