Spider-Man: Homecoming Trailer #3

Ever since Sony announced that they would be building a Spider-Man-less spinoff universe, fans have been wondering how that world would work. An entire superhero universe of supporting characters for a top-tier superhero without the top-tier superhero sounds weird and confusing, to say the least. But Sony is confident that it could work now that they are moving forward with Venom and Black and Silver. The former is already well into production, with Tom Hardy playing the titular lead. And even though there have been some conflicting stories, Amy Pascal has stated that the Spider-Man of the MCU would not be a part of the Spider-Man-less universe that they are creating.

Now there is a little rumor that Spider-Man may actually appear in Venom. More on the story below.

The latest rumor comes to us from Jon Schnepp, the director of the documentary The Death of Superman Lives. On a recent visit to Collider Movie Talk, Schnepp spoke about how the Webslinger would be making an appearance in Venom. Here’s what he had to say:

“Spider-Man is going to be in Venom. For the last couple of months, we’ve been hearing how Sony is keeping it all separated, and Spider-Man is in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but every other character that’s in the Spider-Man universe is separate. All I’m saying is that Spider-Man””and I’m talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man””is going to be in Venom.”

As exciting as all of this sounds, I have a little trouble believing in this. Not that I doubt what Schnepp is telling us, but how in the world could something like this work. Spider-Man and Venom’s stories are so intertwined. While the comic book origins are a bit complex, TV series and the film bypassed all of that by introducing Venom as an alien entity that hitched a ride on an asteroid, which would crash land near Spidey, and then use him as a host body. The two would end their symbiotic relationship, and the alien would then bond with a bitter Eddie Brock, whose misfortunes could be traced back to a then black suit Spidey.

Unless director Ruben Fleischer found a way to condense that story into a reasonable amount of time, I don’t see how this could work. Another way that Fleischer could address this is if this was an alternate universe, and the Spider-Man of that universe has already been an established hero. Or maybe it could be a different Spider-Man, maybe Scarlett Spider? That is just speculation on my part.

I won’t go knocking on Schnepp’s bit of news. He certainly has more insight on these projects than any of us. But I will have to put it in the rumor file for now until we can learn more about it and if there is any truth to this story.
