Ready Player One

It’s hard to believe just how many references director Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of Ernest Cline‘s Ready Player One made it into the trailers. But the source material has always been chock full of Easter Eggs, so we always knew we would get some sort of goodies. The trailers that have already been revealed teased the idea of a world where gamers can interact with notable vehicles like the Batmobile and the DeLorean from Back to the Future. There are also characters like the Iron Giant, Chung-Li from Street Fighter, the first Gundam, and more.

And now, as the ultimate tribute to all things geek, Warner Bros. has dropped the latest poster for the film that honors the great artist Drew Struzan. And as you might have guessed, it too has plenty of Easter Eggs to look for. Check it out below.

The poster, which was revealed on the film’s official Facebook page, was designed by Paul Shipper. Based on the look, it’s obvious what it is inspired by. Struzan is probably best known for illustrating the posters for the original Star Wars trilogy.

I’m sure there as some Easter Eggs that require some eagle-eyes, but let’s take this time to discuss what we can see. Obviously, the monster truck pays homage to the late ’80s. It’s interesting how this is still very much a thing nowadays. The masked character below it reminds me of something you might see from Destiny, but since I don’t play the game I don’t know. So please correct me if I am wrong.

There are a couple of character-based avatars that will appear in the film. But it’s not those characters who we should be concerned with. They are standing around the Back to the Future DeLorean, the time-traveling car that has appeared multiple times in the past few trailers we’ve seen.

Academy Award-winner Mark Rylance can be seen wearing a Space Invaders shirt. And there is the Iron Giant and the RX-78-2 Gundam aka, the first ever Gundam.

But how could we forget Spike Spiegel’s Swordfish? The iconic starfighter piloted by Spike has appeared in the fan-favorite anime Cowboy Bebop. Though, it has yet to be seen if the ship will make an appearance in the film. Which it probably will, but it probably will end up being more of an Easter Egg than having an impactful role.

And you’ve got to love how Tye Sheridan‘s Wade Watt and Parzival, Watt’s gaming avatar, have both their fists raised in the air.

Ready Player One also stars Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T. J. Miller, Simon Pegg, Lena Waithe, and more. It opens in theaters on March 29, 2018.
