All good things must come to an end, and for DreamWorks Animation’s How To Train Your Dragon, the animation studio’s flagship animation franchise, that end comes with its third and final film.
The film, now titled How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, will get an exclusive sneak peek at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, where director Dean DeBlois – who had a hand in all three films – will be honored. More on the story below.
Variety broke the news earlier today. In addition to revealing the title, the report gave us the synopsis of the film, which may see Hiccup and Toothless parting ways:
As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.
While their relationship has been tested and grown throughout the two films, it remains to be seen if it can withstand whatever is coming in the third. All of the How To Train Your Dragon films have been a sort of coming-of-age action adventure. The entire franchise is what made DreamWorks Animation what it is now. Others have paled in comparison. So to see How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World be the final one is a bit sad. However, there is no doubt DeBlois will put his heart and soul into it, and make sure it gets a proper sendoff.
Annecy Film Festival artistic director Marcel Jean said of DeBlois and the Dragon franchise:
“We are excited to welcome him this year and present his work in a context that will emphasize his great talent. The “˜How to Train Your Dragon’ franchise is closely linked to our festival and this is why we are eager to offer our audience the chance to preview footage from the film.”
Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, and Craig Ferguson will all return to reprise their respective roles. And yes, Variety put Butler’s name in the report, and yes, we know what happened to his character in the previous How To Train Your Dragon. So it remains to be seen if his name will stay on the bill, and if it does, how DeBlois will address his return.
How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will open in theaters on March 1, 2019.
