“My Boomstick; it’s got me out of a lot of scrapes but be careful”¦ It’s got a hair trigger, kick like a mule.”

Warning: spoilers below…

This was a bad week for fans of Ash vs Evil Dead as STARZ announced that it would not be renewing the show for a fourth season. While the series hit a creative peak this season, the ratings simply were not there. And so this weekend saw the penultimate episode for my favorite show on television. And god dammit they are going down swinging. Last week saw Ash die in order to enter the Rift and rescue Brandy and Kelly. He was half successful as Brandy returned with him thanks to Pablo’s Brujo Especial powers. Kelly is trapped though thanks to Kaya still controlling her body. Let’s hold back the tears for one more week and brace ourselves as tonight, The Dark Ones arrived”¦

This week, Ruby (Lucy Lawless) is desperate and creates a new page of the Necronomicon in an effort to stall the Dark Ones. For those who forgot, the Necronomicon is written on human flesh and penned in human blood, which SUCKS for Knight of Sumeria, Zoe (Emilia Burns). This is an ungodly gruesome scene, and not for the weak at heart. Ash (Bruce Campbell) passes his proverbial torch (his boomstick) to Brandy (Arielle Carver-O’Neill) and makes the plan with Pablo (Ray Santiago): Pablo opens the Rift back up, Ash rescues Kelly’s (Dana DeLorenzo) possessed body from Ruby. One”¦ make that three giant problems. The Dark Ones arrive right as Pablo gets to the Rift.

Brandy gets her full-on baptism in blood in an absolutely killer 10-minute scene which sees her encounter the Evil Dead a la the original films, get trapped in a tool shed, loses an appendage, commit an act of self-mutilation, and then have a ridiculous battle with a deadite cell phone before cackling a family given one-liner and being doused in a blood shower. She is WAY ahead of the family curve here! Kudos to Carver-O’Neill for kicking so much ass here. And again, you can tell the respect the creators have for their audience when they give us such awesome homages to the material that made us fans in the first place. I just wish the fans would’ve “paid” as much respect by ordering STARZ and keep the ratings as high as the show’s quality.

Ash makes it Ruby’s and seems to turn the tables on them but deadite-Zoe distracts him allowing Ruby to do the unfathomable”¦ destroy his chainsaw hand. Leave it to Lucy Lawless to make bending a chainsaw blade the sexiest thing on TV. Before they can finish Ash off, the Dark Ones show up and holy crap, suffice to say, it’s been nice knowing you Ruby. We see just a glimpse of their power when they rip Kaya from Kelly’s body and burn her soul alive, before sucking the soul out of Ruby and throwing her dried out corpse away like nothing. In a moment so quintessentially Ash Williams, Bruce Campbell’s reaction to Ruby’s death is one of the funniest moments in television history!

Ash takes Kelly’s body to go meet up with Pablo and Brandy but as Pablo so eloquently says, “The time has come to test the mettle of men.” The Dark Ones ravaged Elk’s Grove creating a state of martial law before literally rising from the depths to send us towards the finale. I absolutely loved this episode. It had me turn away is disgust from the gore, laugh out loud, and cheer like crazy! Brandy got her chance to shine and prove she’s Ash’s daughter. Bruce got to be Bruce in all his glory.

There is no escaping the bittersweet feeling watching this. Ash vs Evil Dead is one of the best shows on TV and deserves to continue onward. These characters, actors, writers, and creators are so F’N talented. While Campbell and Lawless were established legends, Dana DeLorenzo and Ray Santiago stepped into this world and turned Kelly and Pablo into instant classics. I cannot wait to see what happens in the grand finale, but I’m confident that these two tremendous actors will kill it wherever they go from here. I know next week I’ll be holding back tears.

The series finale of Ash vs Evil Dead is next Sunday night at 9:00 pm EST on STARZ. Starting at 8:00 pm, jump on Twitter with the hashtags #GhostTweeters and #BringBackBoomstick and live-tweet the show. The cast joins in the fun as well.
