What do you get when you place together on the pages of a comic book series a mercenary monkey, flying robots, a mad scientist, and cloning experiments gone wrong? You get This Off Beat Town: an awesomely unique action-packed world full of adventure, danger, and a whole slew of crass characters.

Felix is a mercenary. He’s also a monkey. And he’s made one mad scientist very angry. On the run from a multitude of enemies bent on completing a successful hit on Felix, he must evade their attempts on his life while also deciding whether or not saving the life of hipster chef friend is worth the extra trouble.

Jake Smith‘s This Off Beat Town is an ongoing comic in which each mini-series focuses on different characters within the same world. In the first collection of comics, funded successfully through a Kickstarter campaign, Smith has managed to flesh out excellent world-building. While it’s certainly a wild, entertaining romp, the series is expertly paced and there are some genuinely surprising moments and a level of character development that are truly satisfying in the best of ways. Felix is a protagonist to root for and the supporting characters are just as memorable and enjoyable to learn about.

Smith’s art is also the perfect style for such a gritty, fast-paced world. While in some ways cartoony (which is not a bad thing as I could see This Off Beat Town as an HBO cartoon series), the illustrations – from the grimy, run-down city to the characters themselves – are raw and expressive.

Kickstarter can be a great place to find upcoming, indie creators, and Jake Smith is absolutely an author to look out for. I’m now finding myself anxiously awaiting the next installment of This Off Beat Town along with a new set of inhabitants.

THIS OFF BEAT TOWN is a science fiction action comic taking place in the futuristic, dystopian, Hong Kong-esque city, Nero. The goal for the series is to have every arc take place in a different part of the city dealing with a completely different group of characters! Each arc would be a completely different story set in the same city! This first arc tells the story of FELIX, an ex-mercenary monkey dude, on the run from his previous employer, who he has extremely pissed off. Another mercenary by the name of C.R.O.W. has been sent to retrieve Felix by any means necessary. And Wyatt is the sad sack sushi shop owner who gets caught up in the mercenaries’ crazy battle…
