Well, consider this Jonathan Kasdan continuing the family business. After co-writing the Solo: A Star Wars Story script with his father Lawrence Kasdan, Jonathan is now replacing David Koepp as the screenwriter of Indiana Jones 5.
Lawrence himself wrote the first Indiana Jones adventure, Raiders of the Lost Ark, while Koepp penned Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Additionally, the film is getting a scheduling change again. More on the story below.
Per Collider, the hiring comes on the heels of the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story. While the film was lukewarm, it looks like Disney and Lucasfilm have confidence in the younger Kasdan’s writing abilities. Certainly, his father writing the first Indiana Jones could end up helping him if he gets writer’s block. Either way, you’d think that means we are closer to seeing everyone’s favorite archaeologist who hates snakes back on the big screen.
It’s not clear why Koepp is no longer working on the script. He has a history of working with director Steven Spielberg. In addition to writing Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, he also wrote the script for Jurassic Park, sequel The Lost World, and War of the Worlds. But it’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that has left fans a little bit bitter. But it’s not even clear what the film will be about. Some believe that we could see Dr. Jones hand over his hat and whip to a much younger prodigy. Indy 5 would mark the end of Harrison Ford playing the character. So let’s just hope they give him a proper send off.
Indiana Jones 5 was scheduled to begin production in April 2019. However, because key members of the creative team have not signed off on the script yet, the film’s start date is being delayed. This means it will be unable to meet its July 2020 release. In the same report, Spielberg and Ford are said to be committed to the project. However, Spielberg currently has his hands full with the West Side Story remake. He is also mulling over making The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, a historical drama with Mark Rylance. Ford will be providing a voice in The Secret Life of Pets 2.
Disney has not announced a new release date for Indiana Jones 5. But we will keep you posted should that time come.
