Just recently it was announced that HBO had given a full-series order to a new show from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly creator Joss Whedon which will be titled The Nevers.
Now Whedon is back in the news. It’s being reported that a reboot of his Buffy the Vampire Slayer is being developed by Fox 21 Television.
This new take on Buffy will be written and executive produced by Monica Owusu-Breen, who will also handle showrunner duties. Owusu-Breen is creator, writer, and executive producer on Midnight, Texas, and was also a writer and producer on Charmed, Alias, LOST, and Fringe.
Whedon will executive produce the reboot, and is currently working with Owusu-Breen to develop it. It’s not yet known if he’ll also end up writing or directing any episodes. The two have worked together in the past on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which Owusu-Breen was a writer and co-executive producer on and Whedon co-created, co-wrote and directed the pilot episode for, and executive produces.
Original producers Gail Berman, Fran Kazui, and Kaz Kazui will also executive produce the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer, along with Joe Earley from Berman’s Jackal Group.
Of the news, the producers released this statement on their vision for the new iteration:
“Like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today.”
According to the report, part of that diversity in this new take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer will be finding a black actress to take on the title role.
The reboot is said to be contemporary, and will build on the mythology established in the original. The current plan is shop it out to streaming and cable networks sometime this summer.
The report’s sources stress, however, that things are still in the early stages and details could change.
