Aquaman may not have had the best introduction in Justice League, but the easily mocked character will get a chance to prove himself in his own film Aquaman. James Wan is at the helm for the latest superhero epic, which will see Jason Momoa reprising his role as Arthur Curry, a man who is both a human and an Atlantean, who must return to his undersea home to stop his half-brother, King Orm (Patrick Wilson) from going to war with the surface dwellers.

The cast and Wan were over at San Diego Comic-Con to talk a little bit about Aquaman, but more importantly, give us the first trailer for the film. Prepare for plenty of jumping the shark moments. Check out the trailer below.

Honestly, this looks like it could have been a part of the DCEU slate of films that led up to Justice League. Tonally, Aquaman looks like it is all over the place. But that is due in part to the fact that the underwater world looks far more interesting than the surface world. There have been plenty of instances were we have seen the lead go from reluctant hero to accepting the person he was meant to be. That is no different here.

While this may be the first trailer, I was really hoping for something far more substantial than Momoa flexing his muscles. But maybe the small nuances like the crowd reactions to Arthur and Orm’s fight lead us to hope that the film will be more complex than just a visual showcase.

So I have hope that Aquaman can bring about the kind of change that will put the DCEU in the right the direction. We’ll just have to wait and see if Walter Hamada‘s plans for rebranding the DCEU works.

The film also stars Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Temuera Morrison, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Patrick Wilson, and Nicole Kidman.

Aquaman opens in theaters on December 21, 2018.
