Veronica Mars was revived once. And she can be revived again. Thanks in part to such a large fan base, the detective, played by Kristen Bell, has found her way back into sleuthing.
But she isn’t coming back in a movie sequel. This time it will be in the form of a limited series that will air exclusively on Hulu. More on the story below.
Deadline was the first to post the news. According to their sources, creator Rob Thomas is currently in final negotiations with Hulu for the new show, which will see Bell reprise the title detective. No word yet on who else may be involved, but the report adds that there are conversations with other cast members from the original series and movie.
And don’t worry about The Good Place, as Veronica Mars will not interfere with Bell’s duties on the NBC comedy. The show is being designed as a limited series with an eight-episode run.
Having this as a limited series could prove its franchise potential. If it is successful, there could be future seasons in order. Plus, streaming shows are very popular, and with the show’s already strong built-in fanbase, there is no question that this could be a hit. It just depends on whether or not it can meet or exceed expectations.
The original Veronica Mars ran only for three seasons from 2004 to 2007. However, this goes back to the that strong fanbase, as the show was able to be revived thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, which ended up raising $5 million in 2013. That went into producing and releasing a film in 2014. And it appears that the following has not died out.
The new series will be led by Thomas, once again.
For those who may not be familiar with the teen-noir show centered on a high school outcast who would help her private detective father “dig into the lives of the rich and famous in the messed-up town of Neptune, CA.” The film followed an adult Veronica returning to Neptune to help one of her ex-boyfriends, who has been accused for murder.
Of course, this is only an announcement. We have yet to see and hear anything about when and where the series will take place. It would be nice to see the series as a follow-up to the film. But that is just my opinion. Of course, we will keep you posted on any developments should they come in.
