I recently had the pleasure of reading the new graphic novel Judas. I was curious what sort of spin this comic would take, but was astounded when I actually did get to read it in its entirety. Thought-provoking, emotional, complicated. Those are probably the most apt words I could use to describe this release. Curious? Well then, read on, friends!

This biblical story itself is about as well-known as you can get, at least the beginning of it is. Judas was a disciple, then a betrayer. Little else is ever explored, other than to note that his shame and humiliation drove him to suicide. But what if his destiny was already written? What if he was a victim of fate and divine planning? These are just a couple of the questions this story explores. For, in this tale, it’s not just about betrayal but also redemption and forgiveness. But not in the ways that you might think!

Introspection and determination play their parts, too. Imagine yourself in the place of Judas, forever haunted by your actions in the afterlife. But then someone whispers into his ear, sparking his curiosity and starting a fire within to find the truth. Was he destined to be universally loathed? Was it even his fault or did he get trapped and tricked into sentencing the messiah to his fate, as well?

Writer Jeff Loveness has created a work of such depth and debate that I really cannot wait to discuss it with others. Unfortunately, I can only allude to the story here, for it is a twisting tale that I would spoil if I revealed any more than I already have. Trust me when I say it is amazingly complicated and yet entirely simple. You will ponder the mysteries within for days to come, perhaps longer. The beautiful dark and haunting art from Jakub Rebelka is perfect for this comic. His use of a darker color palette allows for the perfect ambiance and truly sets the mood of the graphic novel.

Collecting all four issues of the mini-series, this is a great book for anyone that is curious about what might have happened or someone who might struggle with the characterization of this particular biblical persona. It will not create a crisis of faith; but if you already question religion, it might be up your alley, too. I found it to be the most interesting thing I have read this summer. It is short but loaded with theological complexities, exploring other characters in a more peripheral manner.

I would not be surprised to see another story about one of the others that were discussed within this tale. I recommend this to any adult, maybe not so much for teens as not everyone will see below the surface for the twists that are placed there subtly. I know there is not a lot of information about the book, but if I say too much, it might ruin it for you! Enjoy and let me know how you liked it.
