Jordan Peele might produce Candyman remake

Seeing Bernard Rose’s 1992 film Candyman is an essential movie-viewing experience. And like many of the classic horror films that came out during that time, it has gotten some sort of remake treatment. But the interesting thing about Candyman was that it was a film ahead of its time. Not only was it a horror, it also addressed socioeconomic issues. A true rarity. So it should be no surprise that a remake could be in the works. Not only that, but it appears that Jordan Peele will produce and could be tapped to direct. More on the story below.

Per Bloody-Disgusting, Peele is in talks to produce Candyman through his MonkeyPaw productions. But it’s not clear if he will direct, although there are some who believe he could be asked to. So we’ll keep a close eye on that.

As for the film itself, Candyman is based on Clive Barker“˜s Books of Blood short story “The Forbidden.” Here’s a little back story on the character, who was played by Tony Todd in the original film:

Candyman was the son of a slave who became prosperous after developing a system for mass-producing shoes during the Civil War. He grew up in a polite society and became a well-known artist, sought after for his talent in producing portraits. After falling in love with and fathering a child with a white woman in 1890, Candyman was set upon by a lynch mob hired by his lover’s father; they cut off his painting hand and replaced it with a hook. He was smeared with honey stolen from an apiary, attracting hungry bees which stung him to death.

It’s hard not to see why Peele may be considering being attached to this project. After all, it falls into his wheelhouse of providing thought-provoking stories with genre films. And a film like Candyman may give Peele the opportunity to address other issues he didn’t get a chance to in Get Out. So it should be exciting to see if he does end up directing.

The image of Candyman was the stuff of nightmares. A man with hooks for hands, who had bees crawling on his face, just gave me sleepless nights as a kid. I don’t know what compelled me to rent it on VHS at the time, but after watching it, I had a terrible fear of bees.

Remakes come and go, but if done properly, it could be something very enjoyable to watch. Especially with someone like Peele on board. Of course, we will keep you posted should any new developments come in.
