It may be a bit strange that we aren’t getting a new Fast and Furious film in the near future. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t getting some kind of Fast and Furious film in the near future. The series is taking a bit of a detour from the main saga to give fans the franchise’s first ever spin-off. Hobbs and Shaw will reunite Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson for a new adrenaline rush with muscle tone actioner that will definitely be fast and furious.
Now the spinoff has just started its first day of production, and Johnson is commemorating the day with a brand new image of Statham and director David Leitch (Deadpool 2). Check it out here below.
The image comes to us from Johnson, who posted it on his official Instagram account. In it we see both Statham and Leitch discussing – or at least having a new behind the scenes laughs – a scene. Of course, since this is a Fast and Furious film, there has to be exotic cars in the background. But it’s what Johnson said in the caption that should be of interest. Here’s the caption:
DAY 1 and the evolution has officially begun.
Long awaited Fast & Furious spin-off movie, #HobbsAndShaw is electric.
My partner in heavy crime & fun @jasonstatham is lookin’ like $1million bucks and holdin’ it all down.
Our visionary & bad ass director @davidmleitch (just directed Deadpool2) at the helm and ready to evolve the franchise in exciting and fresh new ways.
And as always, our @sevenbucksprod president @hhgarcia41 capturing the dopest images thru his 📷 lens.
Keep crushing on that set boys… the man known as “HOBBS” will touch down in London in two weeks.
Pancakes, tequila and ass kickin’s 🥞🥃 on me.

A spin-off would definitely be the way to “evolve the franchise in exciting and fresh new ways.” Not that it hasn’t happened before with it. The franchise first started out as a rag tag crew racing on the streets of Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; and Tokyo, Japan. Since then it has evolved into a heist actioner. And once more into a revenge actioner. And finally turning into a pure globe-trotting actioner. But none of them forgot that racing and family are the lifeblood of these films. So it should be interesting to see how Hobbs and Shaw will stay true to the franchise while also trying to be distinctly different from its predecessors.
Hobbs and Shaw have squared off in previous films and have been forced to reluctantly team up in others. But it looks like they will play nice when they face a common foe, played by Idris Elba. Vassena Kirby will play Shaw’s sister.
Written by Chris Morgan, Hobbs and Shaw races into theaters on August 2, 2019.
