Lucy Bluecrowne is really unhappy. She only feels at home on the sea with her father, brother, stepmother and crew aboard The Left-Handed Fate. She knows her father only wants his family together, and after almost losing Lucy, feels that a ship is no place for a girl to grow up. Lucy knows better. The sea is in her bones and the ship talks to her. She tries to make the best of a bad situation for the sake of her brother, Liao, who can make fire magical. When two evil men attempt to steal her gifted sibling, it’s up to Lucy to save the day. But how can an ordinary girl pit herself against such supernatural evil?

Bluecrowne: A Greenglass House Story caught me at the first paragraph when I realized that the first character you meet was not hiking through the land, but was hiking through time, leisurely. Imagine the possibilities. Once I realized that it was for nefarious intentions, I became less enthralled. The supernatural elements were not what kept me deeply in this story, despite the hook at the beginning. What really got me was the theme of family, and how much these four people belonged together despite the unconventional way they merged.
At first glance, some of the names might seem formidable to the middle school set; however, the adventure and delight further in, more than makes up for it. The book actually made me cry and Lucy, the special heroine with the least amount of powers, is someone for both boys and girls to look up to, just as this novel is one I see both genders completely enjoying. You find yourself rooting for good with a shout and booing the evil with an imaginary fist.
I’m looking forward to more adventures with this family.
Return to the world of the bestselling Greenglass House, where smugglers, magic, and pyrotechnics mix, in a new adventure from a New York Times best-selling, National Book Award–nominated, and Edgar Award–winning author.
Lucy Bluecrowne is beginning a new life ashore with her stepmother and half brother, though she’s certain the only place she’ll ever belong is with her father on a ship of war as part of the crew. She doesn’t care that living in a house is safer and the proper place for a twelve-year-old girl; it’s boring. But then two nefarious strangers identify her little brother as the pyrotechnical prodigy they need to enact an evil plan, and it will take all Lucy’s fighting instincts to keep her family together.
Set in the magical Greenglass House world, this action-packed tale of the house’s first inhabitants reveals the origins of some of its many secrets.
