Clan Fraser graced the stage at Madison Square Garden for the NYCC Outlander season 4 panel. Joining stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin were executive producers Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis, as well as Outlander author Diana Gabaldon. The cast and creators shared insights and answered questions with regards to the many changes and challenges that the protagonists will face this new season in a brand new land (and time period for some). But before the panel began, fans were treated to the season premiere episode! Check out some panel highlights here below.
Top 3 Takeaways from the Outlander Panel
Other Travelers – Moore let us know during a game with the cast that we will be seeing other travelers this season. For fans of the book series, we know that means we’ll be seeing Roger and Bree travel back. Reunions and first-time meetings are ahead.
Theme/Tone – When asked about the theme and the tone for this season, Moore mentioned that “This is the season they finally decide to claim a home and to have a home. It’s a great retelling of the American foundation myth.” He continued on by discussing the tone, when asked about how our current political climate has impacted the show. “Ultimately, the show is about the characters and the story,” Moore said. “We don’t choose to use it as a platform for our political ideas. At the same time, we all live in this world and we try to be cognizant of what is happening. We truly try to look at the world we live in and we can’t help but let it influence our work.”
The evolution of the Fraser’s relationship – The tried and true story of Jamie and Clare’s relationship is one of the driving forces of the show’s success. Balfe noted that “There’s such a contentment this season. You finally see them enjoying building a life together. It’s much more settled. There’ll always be external forces at play, but this couple is together now.” Continuing on with those sentiments in mind, Heughan added, “They’ve been through a lot. Their relationship is old and at the core of it is great understanding. They’ve been fighting to be together, and they finally are. And to find a home; something Jamie has yearned for.
The Fraser clan try to make a new home in colonial North Carolina this season, as Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) must negotiate a tenuous loyalty to the current British ruling class–despite Claire’s knowledge of the American Revolution to come. Meanwhile in the 20th century, a shocking discovery makes Claire and Jamie’s daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and her would-be love interest, historian Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin), consider following in Claire’s time-traveling footsteps.
