‘Avengers 4’ Runtime Could Be As Long As 3 Hours

Thanos in Avengers Infinity War

The Avengers films are already large-scale epics that feature an ensemble group of heroes uniting to fight a common foe. And at times they even fight amongst themselves. But none of these films actually ran to or over three hours. However, a new Instagram Q&A with director Joe Russo revealed that Avengers 4 could run up to three hours. More on the report below.

A fan asked Russo about the film’s runtime on an Instagram Q&A. Here’s what he had to say:

“The running time on Avengers 4 is currently sitting right at three hours. We’ll see if that holds.”

Now, this doesn’t mean the film will be three hours long. Avengers 4 is due out in theaters next May, so there is a chance that the runtime could be whittled down to an average runtime for an Avengers film, which is still pretty long. With six months left before the film is released, there is still a lot of post-production work that needs to be done. And here’s what Russo had to say about that:

“We’re about halfway through the editing process. We’re really just scratching the surface on all of our VFX shots. There are more than 3,000 VFX shots in the movie; those require a lot of time and thought and energy and effort, and we’re very early in the phase of getting VFX done. We’ve just started work with Alan Silvestri on the score, and we’re still editing picture at this point.”

Avengers: Infinity War ran at two hours and 49 minutes. So if the three-hour cut does “hold,” that could mean extra minutes of superhero action. Or just some more exposition. But there is no word yet on whether or not Marvel Studios and Disney would actually approve of the three-hour cut. It would make the untitled Avengers 4 one of the longest films in the studios’ library.

It’s not like the runtime would have any affect on the stakes or quality of Avengers 4, but Russo answered a question about what fans can expect from the highly anticipated sequel:

“Will the stakes be higher in Avengers 4? Absolutely. 100 percent. The highest of any of the films to date, without question.”

As to when we could see an actual trailer, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hinted that fans could see it before the end of the year. Of course, with something as vague as that, it could possibly mean that it drops on December 31. We’ll keep you up to date on any new developments as soon as they come in.

Avengers 4 arrives in theaters on May 3, 2019.
