A Julie Andrews cameo in Mary Poppins Returns would make a lot of sense since the singer and actress was the star of the original film. However, Andrews confirmed that she would not appear in the follow-up starring Emily Blunt as to not take away her spotlight. So Andrews has settled for a different kind of role. A very unlikely one. According to a new report, Andrews will be lending her voice talents to James Wan‘s Aquaman. More on the report below.
EW was able to break the scoop over the Thanksgiving holiday where producer Peter Safran said Andrews will voice the Karathen. Here’s what he told the magazine:
“We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered. And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer.
When asked about the timing of this and having Andrews in a film that competes with one she has ties with, Safran had this to say:
Who knew that Aquaman would have the real Mary Poppins this Christmas?”
Now, Karathen will play a vital role in Aquaman as she will be the key that will help Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) unite the surface world with the undersea world.
Andrews has not appeared in a film in almost decade with her last role being in Disney’s Tooth Fairy. However, she has had multiple voice roles in films throughout the last decade including animated features like Despicable Me and Shrek, and a live-action one in Enchanted.
Although Andrews did not opt to have a role in Mary Poppins Returns, she is fully supportive of the project. It’s just not clear what drew her to the Aquaman role. Whatever her reasons, we get to hear Andrews on the big screen again, which is something you can be on board with.
Oddly enough, Mary Poppins Returns will open on December 19, 2018. That’s two days earlier than Aquaman, which opens in December 21, 2018. So it will be interesting to see which one of the films come out on top at the box office. Will audiences take an action film over something more family friendly or will nostalgia beat out an action blockbuster? We will just have to wait and see.
But Aquaman will be available for early previews for Amazon Prime members on December 15, 2018. That’s five days before its theatrical release.
