Five years ago, Disney began working on an adaptation of Artemis Fowl based on author Eoin Colfer‘s book series of the same name. The film, described as Die Hard with fairies, follows a young criminal mastermind who gets in over his head when he kidnaps a fairy.
Now the studio’s newest live-action film from Cinderella and Murder on the Orient Express director Kenneth Branagh has a trailer. Check it out below along with a new poster.
This is pretty much a teaser trailer but that doesn’t take away from the anticipation. Though it is short on plot, it does manage to provide a few intriguing details as to what audiences can expect to see.
“Our world has never been in more danger,” a mysterious voice says as the camera pans over a forest and cityscape from above.
“Human greed is what drove us underground all those years ago…” the voice continues as it then switches to a bustling city.
“To escape from your rapacious appetite,” the camera starts to rotate and zoom in on a boy in the center. He appears to be standing in a dark room and looking out towards the light.
“I warn you boy, you are not prepared for the truth,” the voice says as we see our title character with Butler (yes, that’s his name) lower something underground. However, the speed of it increases rapidly and we soon see that the contraption looks like a mode of transportation with “Haven City Express” written above.
“Now you will believe, Artemis Fowl,” the voice says as the trailer closes out with quick shots of fantastical guns, mystical bows and arrows, an old woman transforming into a young one, a gang being blown away by a mysterious man in green, and Artemis Fowl walking with a cool composure as the title starts to reveal itself.
The film stars Ferdia Shaw as the titular Artemis Fowl, with Nonso Anozie as Domovoi Butler, Fowl’s bodyguard. It also stars Judi Dench who plays Commander Root. Josh Gad, Lara McDonnell, and Hong Chau are also in the film.
While it may look like the adaptations of YA novels have come and gone, there appear to be some books that are worthy of a big screen treatment. Colfer’s popular eight-novel series has garnered critical and commercial acclaim. So it makes sense that the successful books get its own film adaptations.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
“Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization””the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan””so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.”
Artemis Fowl will open in theaters on August 9, 2019.
