If there is going to be a Godzilla sequel called Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, there’d very well better be a fight that reflects that subtitle. And Michael Dougherty‘s film looks like it will live up to that title. Warner Bros. has just dropped the newest trailer for the highly anticipated sequel that sees the title Kaiju engaging in an all-out battle with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. All the while, humans pin their hopes of survival on Godzilla as they do all they can to bring the three giants down. Check out the trailer here below.
The first trailer, which dropped during SDCC this summer, gave fans a shadowy preview of the match of the year. None of the aforementioned monsters could be fully seen. However, this new trailer gives us our first look at all three. While the sequel will feature this giant fight, there is also the human element to consider. We clearly see that when it comes to humanity surviving this fight between titans, politics still comes into play. Which makes sense, which monsters are on the side of humanity and which are there to destroy them. It’s not like they can communicate with them to discuss who should live and die and who should be crowned king.
The humans at the center of it all will be Madison (Bobby Millie Brown), who learned all she knows about titans from her mother, played by Vera Farmiga. Farmiga describes the character as a DJ for the monsters, being one of the few people within the Monarch organization who can speak to these monsters by means of bioacoustics on a sonar level.
Now the first Godzilla was a visually great film, but it lacked an engaging story. However, the franchise proved it has plenty of world-building potential when it introduced Kong in Kong: Skull Island. And as that post-credit scene revealed, Kong isn’t the only monster out there as cave drawings of Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah were shown on a slide show. So now here we are, just months away from seeing the third installment of the MonsterVerse that was first launched with Godzilla in 2014. After this, we get into the one fight that everyone has been waiting for, Godzilla vs. King Kong.
Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, Bradley Whitford, Thomas Middleditch, Charles Dance, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, and Zhang Ziyi also star.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Written by Dougherty and Zach Shields, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters opens in theaters on May 31, 2019.
