Though Dwayne Johnson wasn’t a part of the Fast and Furious franchise from the beginning, his star power has helped it become what it is today. In fact, he has made it so popular that more and more franchises are coming out, with multiple spinoffs on the way.
Now, Johnson has released a very small trailer teaser for the franchise’s first spinoff Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw. In it, Johnson will reunite with Jason Statham, both of whom are reprising their respective titular roles. Additionally, the actor spoke about how he may not appear in Fast and Furious 9, but recognizes that his character has a score to settle with Dom (Vin Diesel). More on the story and the teaser video below.
Johnson spoke to MTV news about the likelihood of him appearing in Fast and Furious 9. However, it doesn’t look like that is happening as Hobbs isn’t a part of the ninth installment. But he does leave the door slightly open for a cameo in it. Additionally, he seems to be very interested in settling the score with Dom. Here’s what he had to say:
“The plan has always been for the Fast and Furious universe to grow and expand. As of now, we’re not in Fast 9 because they’re getting ready to start shooting. But who knows with Fast 10 and down the road, you never know. Because look, at the end of the day, the truth is, there’s unfinished business between Hobbs and Dom. It’s unfinished.”
Has Johnson buried the hatchet between himself and Diesel? There was an ongoing rumor that the two were in a feud. Though neither of them would call the other out. Instead, they hinted at trouble being on the set. Which became obvious when the two never appeared together in the same scene in Fate of the Furious. While the tenth Fast and Furious film may be the end of the franchise, we can still look forward to spinoffs – should Hobbs and Shaw be successful. For one thing, Diesel recently shared a post that announced the franchise would expand by adding another spinoff with a female-centric cast. However, Universal has yet to announce if that project is heading into development.
It will be interesting to see how much further Fast and Furious can go from here. What started out as a street racing movie evolved into an international heist film. It then morphed into a globe-trotting spy actioner. What will happen next and how these spinoffs will differ from the first eight Fast and Furious films remains to be seen.
As for the first look at the spinoff, Johnson released a very small teaser announcing that the Fast and Furious Present: Hobbs and Shaw trailer will appear online on Friday:
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw also stars Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, Roman Reigns, Eiza Gonzalez, Eddie Marsan, Cliff Curtis, and Helen Mirren.
Directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2), Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw opens in theaters on August 2, 2019.
