Cast For ‘Dracula’ Miniseries From ‘Sherlock’ Creators Announced

Dracula (1931)

Back in October it was announced that a new adaptation of Bram Stoker‘s horror classic Dracula was on the way to Netflix and BBC One from Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, creators of the hit series Sherlock.

Now the cast is coming together, with the announcement of six new actors signing on to star. Those actors are John Heffernan, Joanna Scanlan, Dolly Wells, Morfydd Clark, Lujza Richter, and Gatiss, who is also co-writing and executive producing. They join Claes Bang, who’s set to play Count Dracula himself.

Here’s the announcement and some quotes from Netflix’s press release:

It was announced today that John Heffernan (Collateral, The Crown), Joanna Scanlan (Hold The Sunset, No Offence), Dolly Wells (Can You Ever Forgive Me, 45 Years), Morfydd Clark (His Dark Materials, Patrick Melrose) , Lujza Richter (Phantom Thread) and series co-writer Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who, Sherlock) have joined the cast of Dracula.

They will star alongside Claes Bang in the title role of the new mini-series, in roles that will be revealed in due course. Dracula is inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic novel and is written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. The series will begin filming this Spring.

Commissioned by BBC One, Dracula will be produced by Hartswood Films and is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix.

Mark Gatiss says: “I’m running out of childhood dreams to come true. And what a delight to join this fantastic cast. The children of the night!”

Steven Moffat says: “So exciting to see an amazing new cast start to assemble, I hope Claes doesn’t eat them all.”

Three feature length episodes will re-introduce the world to Dracula, the vampire who made evil sexy. In Transylvania in 1897, the blood-drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.

Dracula was commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content and Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama. It is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss; executive producers are Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue for Hartswood Films, Ben Irving for BBC and it will be handled by Larry Tanz for Netflix.

The series will premiere on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix outside of the UK.

Moffat and Gatiss are no strangers to Universal’s classic monsters, so it will be exciting to see their take on the legendary vampire. Moffat wrote and executive produced a 2007 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde miniseries titled Jekyll, which Gatiss also starred in an episode of. Moffat also worked on Universal’s Dark Universe take on the character, which was also titled Jekyll and had Ruben Fleischer attached to direct and Chris Evans attached to star, but it’s not clear if his work will still be used now that Universal has killed off the Dark Universe and has changed course on their classic monsters plans. Gatiss also starred in the 2015 movie Victor Frankenstein.

No release window for Dracula has been announced yet.
