Pixar’s Onward may open in theaters in 2020, but we are getting our first look at the film that combines fantasy and reality.
In the upcoming animated feature, Tom Holland and Chris Pratt play two magical elves who embark on a quest to find out if there is still magic left in the world. It will be the studio’s newest original film following 2017’s Coco. Check out the two new images below.
These images were released exclusively over at People, who also managed to grab a few quotes from writer-director Dan Scanlon (Monsters University):
“Tom Holland is perfect for our character of Ian, the younger brother. We were looking for someone who could have this shy quality and someone who is good at being a little awkward. And Tom is great at that! And yet has a genuine sweetness to him that you really root for him.â€
So it only makes sense that the older brother is the polar opposite of that. This is where Pratt comes into play. Scanlon added:
“We wanted someone who was the exact opposite of that. Someone who could be wild and chaotic and out of control, but in a very charming and infectious way. And Chris Pratt is perfect for that. He has this ability to be both sort of wild and out of control but in a really lovable, fun, infectious way.â€
This isn’t be the first time that Holland and Pratt have starred together in a film, appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe together, but it will be the first where only their voices are being used.
As for the images themselves, they don’t mean much without any sort of context. But we can see that this world is very much like our own, but there is just a little more magic to it.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
In Disney and Pixar’s “Onward,†two teenage elf brothers embark on an extraordinary quest in a van named Guinevere to discover if there is still a little magic left in the world. Featuring Tom Holland as the voice of Ian Lightfoot, and Chris Pratt as the voice of Ian’s older brother, Barley.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer also have voice roles in the film.
Onward opens in theaters on March 6, 2020.
