Disney Pixar ONWARD

Onward is best described as a fantasy adventure set in suburbia. And based on the two images that were released earlier this week, that would seem to be the case. Now DisneyӢPixar has unveiled their first trailer for the upcoming animated film starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt as two elves who embark on a quest to see if there is still magic left in the world. Check out the full trailer here below.

This teaser comes ahead of the release of Toy Story 4, which will hit theaters later this summer. Though it is a small preview of Onward, it does give us a sense of the story, characters, and visuals.

The trailer opens with majestic scenery where unicorns fly freely and mermaids swim about. In fact, the opening tags read, “In times of old, the world was magical. But times change.” It’s then that we see a more modern and civilized world. That fantastical scenery transforms into New Mushroomton, presumably where the film is set. This world isn’t that much different from our own. Set in suburbia where mushrooms have been turned into homes, we see 747s fly through the sky. Centaurs take a morning jog, or is it a morning gallop? Satyrs paint walls with ease. Trolls still take tolls for other magical beings to pass through, or they flip “Cash 4 Gem” signs. Mermaids lounge around in inflatable pools. Garden gnomes actually tend to the garden.

Then there are the household pets, but instead of dogs, elves have tiny dragons. Then there are feral unicorns that will rummage through garbage.

It’s at this point that we are introduced to Ian (voiced by Holland) and Barley (Pratt), brotherly elves who are about to embark on an extraordinary adventure. Together, they drive in a ’70s van that has a flying unicorn painted on the sides.

In the film, Holland plays Ian, the younger brother, who is shy and a little awkward, but has a genuine sweetness to him that will have audiences rooting for him. Then there’s Barley. Voiced by Pratt, Barley is someone “who could be wild and chaotic and out of control, but in a very charming and infectious way.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus voices Ian and Barley’s mother.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

In Disney and Pixar’s “Onward,” two teenage elf brothers embark on an extraordinary quest in a van named Guinevere to discover if there is still a little magic left in the world. Featuring Tom Holland as the voice of Ian Lightfoot, and Chris Pratt as the voice of Ian’s older brother, Barley.

Octavia Spencer also has a voice role in the film.

Directed by Dan Scanlon (Monsters University), Onward opens in theaters on March 6, 2020.
