Mindy Kaling is no stranger to having a successful TV series run on Hulu. Now we are getting a first look at her latest project for the network, a TV series adaptation of Richard Curtis‘ Four Weddings and A Funeral, which she co-created, co-wrote, and executively produced. Like the original, the film will follow a group of friends who reunite for four weddings and a funeral while also trying to figure out if true love is an actual thing that they can obtain. Check out the trailer here below.
Based on this one trailer alone, the Four Weddings and A Funeral TV series might be as charming and irresistible as the film itself. Sure it may have all the classic tropes of a rom-com – like the falling in love with another person’s significant other, or falling in love with someone you had a bad first impression with, etc. But honestly, this new modern take provides something of a change. There is a more diverse cast at play. And while they may be friends, reuniting at these celebratory events and emotionally heavy memorials may actually complicate things.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Maya (Nathalie Emmanuel), the young communications director for a New York senatorial campaign, receives a wedding invitation from her college schoolmate now living in London. She leaves her professional and personal life behind, in favor of traveling to England and reconnecting with old friends and ends up in the midst of their personal crises. Relationships are forged and broken, political scandals exposed, London social life lampooned, love affairs ignited and doused, and of course there are four weddings”¦ and a funeral.
I am intrigued to see how adapting Four Weddings and A Funeral into a TV series will work. Which plot points from the original will be further expanded and what sort of new storylines will be added to keep things fresh while staying true to the spirit of the original.
Zoe Boyle, Nathalie Emmanuel, Guz Khan, Sophia La Porta, Harish Patel, Nikesh Patel, John Reynolds, Rebecca Rittenhouse, and Brandon Mychal Smith also star. Episodes will start to be released on Hulu on July 31, 2019
