SDCC 2019: Oscar-Winner Mahershala Ali To Play ‘Blade’ The Vampire Hunter In New Marvel Film

Blade title card Marvel Studios

It never ceases to amaze me what surprises Marvel Studios can bring to any geeky convention, especially one as large as the San Diego Comic-Con. While we can expect to hear about sequels and confirmations of certain titles, they have been known to catch everyone, and I mean everyone, off guard. Take, for instance, them announcing that Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali will play the title role in Blade.

Here’s what Marvel Studios tweeted out during the panel today:

The cool grays and whites against the black background seems to play towards the character’s duality of being an immortal vampire who has the ability to walk in daylight.

Created by writer Marv Wolfman and penciller Gene Colan, Blade’s first appearance was in the comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10. He was famously played by Wesley Snipes in three films from New Line starting in 1998. Of course, many had hoped that Marvel would bring the character back. All three of the previous films were written by David Goyer, but the best one of them, by far, is Blade II, which directed by Guillermo del Toro, and featured Snipes, Ron Perlman, Norman Reedus, and Donnie Yen and more as a crew of specialized vampires who were hunting a new dangerous super-powered breed of vampires. Quite a diverse cast and crew.

Of course, since the reboot has just been announced, we know very little about it. But this is Marvel we are talking about, they wouldn’t just hand the keys to their title films to just anyone.

As for Ali, who will take over the Vampire Hunter mantle, he’s more than a capable actor. He’s a two-time Oscar winner, getting for Best Supporting Actor for both Moonlight and The Green Mile.

And for a little bit in the character, here’s a profile from Marvel.com:

The vampire Deacon Frost bit Eric Brooks’ mother while she was pregnant with him, resulting in the birth of a human with all of the strengths of a vampire and none of their weaknesses save one: a never-ending thirst for human blood!

No director, writer, or release date has been announced as of yet. But we will keep you posted when those developments come in.
