It’s a great time to be a Shudder subscriber. AMC’s horror and genre streaming service is hitting high gear as we inch closer towards October and Halloween season. Just last week, two Shudder Exclusives — The Cleansing Hour and Blood Machines — are screening at Fantastic Fest, while Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire premiered on the service a few days ago. Well prepared to get spoiled because this week may be even bigger for Shudder. The eagerly anticipated Creepshow series from The Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero debuts on 9/26. But if you can’t wait till Thursday, how about Tuesday? One of the most successful independent films of all time as well as an awesome and hilarious zombie comedy, One Cut of the Dead, will hit Shudder on Tuesday, 9/24.
Made for a mere $27,000, the film went on to make $28 million in Japan. Written and directed by Shin’Ichiro Ueda and filmed with a no-name cast, One Cut of the Dead is both a fantastic zombie film and one of the most unique film-viewing experiences imaginable. Filmed in (as the title suggests) one long unedited cut, the first third of the film is pure zombie goodness, with blood, splatter, body parts, and more. Then it turns surreal and I will not spoil the fun. Suffice to say, it’s something completely different.
The film won countless awards in its festival run and is being lauded as a modern zombie classic. If you love movies like The Return of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and Zombieland, this will definitely be a must watch for you.
