2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey, the groundbreaking film by Stanley Kubrick, celebrated its 50th anniversary this month, a milestone for a film that remains unlike no other.

Transcending its face value of a science fiction movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, which polarized audiences and critics alike upon its first release in April 1968, remains a visual allegory for a multitude of complex ideas that spread social, humanistic, societal, and ultimately spiritual aspects. Birth, death, and reawakening act as common and essential threads through the entire narrative, and it acts as multitudes of tones and styles interwoven throughout, with dazzling visual spectacles that arrest and envelope sensory perception in ways almost unheard of in cinema prior to 1968. It’s a monumental film, a true epic in the greatest light possible, and it remains a cornerstone of inspiration, wonderment, and an apex of what the cinema can really do and how far it can go.

Rory Gallagher

This month saw the 70th birthday of the late Rory Gallagher, who quite possibly remains one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived, and who most of today’s generation probably never heard of. Born on March 2, 1948, the late Irishman’s down to earth appearance and aw-shucks (in the best way possible) demeanor and attitude almost masked a musical talent that literally and not arguably sometimes stood toe to toe with other heavyweights of the craft like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page, all of whom sang his praises and were in complete awe of his talents, like millions around the globe.

And yet, there still remains a kind of ambiguity and mystery about who the man was if one asks the John Q guitar playing public.

In Memoriam 2017

In Memoriam 2017: Film, Television, Music, Sports, Literature, the Arts”¦

Every year is tough to look back on the losses of public and beloved figures, but 2017 seemed like an exceptionally hard year for losses, particularly in the music industry. Many seminal figures of their craft died either unexpectedly or suddenly, all tragically. As the heavy remorse still lingers over the loss of these titans and experts of their respective fields, there is also the comfort, if perhaps the only comfort, in knowing that their works, images, and what they left behind will endure and continue to endure, long after we are gone too. Their remembrances are like graffiti on the soul, a welcomed branding of their art and unbridled zest for life that in many cases, that will remain with us and touch us forever. Here’s a list of some notables that we lost in 2017.
