Femme FatalesFemme Fatales
The Complete Second Season
DVD
Directed by Mark A. Altman and Robert Meyer Burnett
Starring Tanit Phoenix, Eric Roberts, Steve Railsback
Entertainment One
Release Date: July 16, 2013

The Cinemax series Femme Fatales must be some kind of hit for the pay cable network best known for having a saucier programming line-up than their competition. As the old saying goes, if it’s 1 a.m. in the morning and two big-bosomed lesbians are getting it on then brother you’re probably watching Cinemax. Based partially on a long-running men’s magazine specializing in profiles of actresses and starlets from the B-grade sci-fi, horror, and action flicks going back six decades or more, Femme Fatales is an anthology series designed to appeal to the periodical’s readership. The show features stories of crime, passion, betrayal, murder, and occasionally some truly off-the-wall material that star at least one or two recognizable characters actors or actresses who never quite took hold of that big brass ring but still manage to keep their careers alive and kicking.

The show’s second season ran from May to August of 2012 and now Entertainment One has collected every episode in the new 3-disc DVD set Femme Fatales: The Complete Second Season.

Scanners II/ Scanners III Combo

Scanners II: The New Order
Blu-ray/DVD Combo
Director: Christian Duguay
Screenwriter: B.J. Nelson
Cast: David Hewlett, Deborah Raffin, Yvan Ponton, Isabelle Mejias, Raoul Trujillo, Tom Butler, Dorothée Berryman
Scream Factory
Rated R | 104 Minutes
Release Date: September 10, 2013

Directed by Christian Duguay (Screamers), Scanners II: The New Order is a direct-to-video sequel to David Cronenberg’s 1981 film, Scanners.

Written by B.J. Nelson (Lone Wolf McQuade), the story involves a crooked politician (Yvan Ponton) who schemes to gain control of a major city by manipulating Scanners (persons born with telepathic and telekinetic abilities) to do his bidding.

David Hewlett stars as David Kellum, a young veterinarian intern who discovers he is a Scanner, meaning he can read and control the minds of others and, if need be, make their heads explode. I’ll be honest, I’m not really sure why this movie exists – or what it’s even about – it just seems like the filmmakers focused on the amazing practical effects on display in Cronenberg’s film and decided to ratchet up the pulsating craniums and head explosions.

BAADASSSSS!   |

Todd and The Book Of Pure EvilTodd & The Book Of Pure Evil
The Complete Second Season
DVD | Instant Video
Directed by James Genn, James Dunnison
Starring Alex House, Maggie Castle, Bill Turnbull
Entertainment One
Release Date: June 25, 2013

Life is tough when you’re a teenager; each day you experience the pains of slowly maturing into adulthood, the stomach-churning terror of high school, and the heart-rending promises of that sweet first love that blows up in your face. For Todd Smith (Alex House), a student at Crowley High and the titular reluctant hero of the Canadian comedy-horror series Todd & the Book of Pure Evil, those are the parts of his teen years he will one day look back on with fondness.

The parts he won’t are what has made this unusual series a minor cult sensation in North America and abroad. At the start of the first season Todd encountered the cursed Book of Pure Evil and tried using it to become a better guitar player and win the heart of his unrequited love Jenny Kolinsky (Maggie Castle). The plan backfired horribly and set the gawky and insecure young metalhead on the path to becoming the Pure Evil One, a dark destiny he tries desperately to avoid as he and his friends Curtis Weaver (Bill Turnbull) and Hannah B. Williams (Melanie Leishman) along with Jenny and occasionally wise and laconic school janitor Jimmy (Jason Mewes) wage weekly battles against the forces of darkness unleashed by the Book and the poor souls who dare attempt to use it to further their own ends. Without getting behind on their homework Todd and the gang encounter zombies, otherworldly monsters, and many other indescribable threats that stand between them and keeping the world safe from evil and making it to graduation in one piece.

Return To Never Land
Blu-ray/DVD/Digital

Release Date: Aug 20, 2013

Return To Never Land soars onto Blu-ray, and though it’s not in ship shape, the Peter Pan-themed movie heads into the most vital port: childhood comfort central. While this sequel cannot stand up to Walt Disney’s masterpiece, I would say this movie is rather fly.

Silhouettes of notable Peter Pan figures and set-pieces highlight the clouds above the London skyline at the start of Return To Never Land, in some ways re-tread of the 1953 classic. But this sequel, which premiered in theaters nearly 50 years after the original, takes some tonal risks and ventures into less-than-wondrous environments.
