Back in 1999, Dean Parisot made a little movie called Galaxy Quest, a scifi-adventure comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman, which at first glance seemed like a parody — and a poke at — scifi franchises like Star Trek. There’s the cast of a cancelled 1970s science fiction television series forced to eke out a living at science fiction fan conventions and grand opening store promotions 20 years after their heyday. Said cast resents the show’s main star, a scene-stealer who takes credit for their successes and often makes paid appearances without them. And there’s the rabid, geeky fans at the convention who seemingly can’t differentiate between an actor and the role he played.

But while Galaxy Quest is humorous in its parody of all those stereotypes, it turns out the film is actually a loving homage to science fiction and its loyal fans. And it’s perfect in every way.

Happy 30th Anniversary To ‘Die Hard,’ The Greatest Action Movie Of All Time!

Die Hard Bruce Willis

Last weekend my kids and I saw Skyscraper, a decent if not unnecessary action thriller starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Paying so much homage it bordered on full ripoff, Skyscraper embraced its parallels to both The Towering Inferno and Die Hard in the marketing of the film. In the end, nearly every critic called it for what it was: another in a long line of Die Hard clones that are summed up by the now almost cliche “Die Hard in a _______.”

Die Hard came out 30 years ago this month (July 15, 1988). The film launched careers and redefined the action genre. It is, in my opinion, the greatest action movie ever made and one of the few perfect films. Based on Roderick Thorp’s 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, Die Hard was directed by John McTiernan and of course starred Bruce Willis as sarcastic New York City cop John McClane out west in LA to reconnect with his estranged wife (Bonnie Bedelia) over Christmas. McTiernan is a hugely underrated action director with Predator, The Hunt for Red October, Die Hard With a Vengeance, and the silly Last Action Hero under his belt.

In Memoriam 2016

In Memoriam 2016: Film, Television, Music, Sports, Literature, the Arts”¦

With 2017 upon us, let’s take one final look back at the luminaries and personalities of the entertainment world who left us in 2016, during a year that seemed more turbulent and taxing than any other in recent memory.

Challenges in the past and challenges ahead, it’s a tough time to live in the world right now with so many changes like a whirling dervish to the senses. While there is much sadness in recognizing and accepting the passing of so many great figures in 2016, it’s the endearing, endless, never-ending fanbase and legacy that will keep each and every one of these names mentioned here (and some are of only cult status, but still enjoy a rabid passionate following as equal as any global figure) alive and well in the consciousness and beyond. In no particular order and apologies in advance if some of your favorites were left off. This was a huge list to go through and what was more painful than compiling this list was the fact that these incredibly talented people are all no longer with us.

Galaxy Quest

Last summer it was reported that the TV series based on the sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest being developed by Paramount would be coming to Amazon. But, as it turns out, there was more to the story than just that.

Star Sam Rockwell was a guest on the Nerdist podcast recently, and he dropped a bit of a shocker: not only was Galaxy Quest 2 a go, but all of the cast was on board for it and the movie was planned to be filming around now. Then came the devastating loss of Alan Rickman, and other cast members’ schedules began to conflict, so the sequel was off.

You can read Rockwell’s quote below.
